Imperial Beach, San Diego County
Imperial Beach is the most southwesterly city in the continental United States; from its pier the bullring of Tijuana is visible down the coast. The Tijuana River reaches the ocean here through a broad estuary that is protected as a research reserve and a stopover for migrating birds. In the 1940s the offshore reefs were among the first big-wave surfing spots on the mainland.
